Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how Miso ("Miso", "we", "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Miso mobile application (the "App"). By using the App you agree to the practices described in this policy.
1. Information we collect
Account information
When you create an account we collect your email address, a username you choose, an optional display name, and an optional profile photo. If you sign in using Apple, Google, or Facebook, we receive your email address and the name on file with that provider through our authentication provider, Supabase. We do not receive your password from those providers.
Health and body profile
To estimate calorie burn for you and your dog you may optionally provide your height, weight, date of birth, and sex. This information is stored in your account profile and is never shown to other users.
Dog information
You may add information about your dog including name, breed, weight, date of birth, and a photo. This information is shown alongside walks and posts according to the visibility you choose for each item.
Walks and location data
When you record a walk we collect your device's location (latitude, longitude, altitude, and timestamp) at regular intervals. We collect location while the App is in use and, if you grant "Always" permission, while the App is in the background, so that your route continues recording when your phone is locked or another app is open. We use this data to draw your route, compute distance and pace, and save the walk to your history.
You can define Privacy Zones (a centre point and a radius) to mask sensitive areas such as your home. When a walk is shared, the portion of the route inside any of your Privacy Zones is not included in the version other users see.
Apple Health data (iOS only)
If you grant Miso access to Apple Health, we read step count and walking/running distance to display in the App, and we read heart rate samples taken during your walks to compute and store an average heart rate for each walk. We do not write any data to Apple Health unless explicitly described in a future update. You can revoke Apple Health access at any time in the iOS Settings app.
Photos
When you upload a profile photo, a dog photo, or a post photo, the image is uploaded to our storage provider and visible to other users according to the visibility you choose. We do not extract facial recognition data, location metadata, or other content from your photos beyond what you upload.
Push notification tokens
If you enable push notifications, we store the push token issued by Apple or Google for your device so we can send you alerts when friends interact with your activity. You can turn off notifications in your device settings at any time.
Posts, comments, and kudos
Content you create in the App — posts, comments, and kudos — is stored along with the time it was created and your account identifier. Visibility of posts is governed by the setting you choose at creation time.
Information we do not collect
Miso does not include third-party advertising, advertising identifiers, analytics SDKs, or behavioural tracking. We do not sell your information.

2. How we use your information
We use the information described above to:
- Provide the core functionality of the App (authentication, recording walks, sharing posts, social features).
- Compute statistics such as distance, calories, and average heart rate for your walks.
- Generate AI-assisted health and walking suggestions for your dog (described further in section 3).
- Send push notifications you have opted into.
- Diagnose problems and improve the reliability of the App.
- Comply with legal obligations.
3. How we share your information
With other Miso users
Each walk and post has a visibility setting: Private (only you), Friends (you and your accepted friends), or Public (any Miso user). We share your content with other users strictly according to the setting you choose. Your username, display name, and profile photo are visible to anyone who can see content you have made non-private.
Service providers
We rely on the following service providers to operate the App. Each provider processes your information solely to provide their service to us:
- Supabase — database, authentication, file storage, and serverless functions. Account information, dog information, walks, photos, posts, comments, and push tokens are stored on Supabase infrastructure.
- Anthropic — when you request AI-generated dog health suggestions, your dog's name, breed, weight, and age are sent through a Supabase serverless function to Anthropic's Claude API to produce a response. Your account identifier is not included in this request. Anthropic's terms govern its handling of that data.
- Expo — push notification tokens are issued by Expo's push service so we can deliver notifications to your device.
- OpenStreetMap / Overpass — when you view nearby dog parks, vets, or pet stores on the map, your current latitude and longitude are sent to the public Overpass API to retrieve points of interest. These requests are not tied to your Miso account.
- Apple, Google, Facebook — if you sign in with one of these providers, the provider receives a sign-in event from us. They share with us only your email address and the name on file.
Legal disclosure
We may disclose information if required to do so by law, by a valid legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Miso, our users, or the public.
Business transfers
If Miso is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any such change in ownership through an in-app notice or email.
4. Your choices and controls
- Visibility per walk and post. You choose Private, Friends, or Public for each walk and post at the time you save it.
- Privacy Zones. Define one or more zones; the route inside a zone is not shared with anyone other than you.
- Friends. A friend connection requires the other user to accept your request before either of you can see Friends-only content.
- Location permissions. Manage in your device settings. Revoking permission stops walk tracking.
- Apple Health permissions. Manage in the iOS Settings app under Privacy > Health > Miso.
- Notifications. Manage in your device settings.
- Account deletion. You can delete your account from Settings. Deleting your account removes your profile, dogs, walks, posts, comments, kudos, friend connections, push token, and uploaded photos. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
- Access and correction. You can review and edit most of your information from within the App. For requests beyond what the App offers, contact us using the address in section 9.
5. Data retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete the data described in section 4 from our active systems within a reasonable period. Backups containing residual copies are overwritten on our provider's regular cycle. Aggregate, non-identifying analytics about App usage may be retained longer.
6. Children
Miso is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us so we can delete it.
7. International users
Miso is operated from Canada. If you access the App from outside Canada, your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in our infrastructure regions, which may be in different jurisdictions than your own. By using the App you consent to that transfer and processing.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, post an in-app notice. Continued use of the App after a change indicates acceptance of the updated policy.
